Phil joined BSAC in 1975, is a National Instructor, First Class Diver and IANTD Trimix diver. As a member of the Norfed Advanced Diving Group and the BSAC Expedition scheme he participated in expeditions to Iceland, St Kilda, Norway and the West Coast of Scotland – and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Geographical Society in 1991.
Phil became Chairman of the BSAC in 1997 for six years at time when the Club faced a number of challenges, then becoming a BSAC Hon Vice President until 2021. He was made MBE in 2011. This was the first recognition of an individual for services to BSAC through the Honours List since the Club was formed in 1953. He is currently an Adjudicator of the Heinke Trophy.
